Morning Routines

Morning Routines or Morning Rituals or whatever fancy name you want to give has become the cornerstone of starting my day. I can’t really remember when I came to know about this performancing enhancing ritual which is now packaged as Morning Routine. I am sure, many of us have been doing this for ages. And, we just never bothered to observe it.

My intention to consider setting up a morning routine came out of incorporating morning journaling habit and going to bed early i.e. on or before 11 pm. I usually go to bed around midnight and aim to wake up at 5 am. Reason being, I am a slow riser and take lots of time to get ready for work.

Another great benefit of waking up early is that it forces you to go to bed much earlier. Sleep has become one of the hottest topic on the productivity section of the internet. Apart from being the mysterious shift in consciousness, sleep has become underrated in the world of entropy. As I’m not an expert in sleep, I will let the Sleep Council experts drill down the importance of it. The information can be found here.

I believe that waking up early has a great impact in one’s life. It gives us an opportunity to prioritise our time and spend it wisely. Recently, I discovered an awesome (now defunct) blog called Daily Routines and very recently an amazing website called My Morning Routine. I highly recommend everyone to visit those websites.

After reading the morning routines of few creative genius, I thought I should put my routine on paper. Even though, I have been following a rough structure for quite some time. At the moment, my morning routine is:

  • Wake up at 5:01 AM.
  • Drink half a litre of lukewarm water.
  • Make a cup of coffee.
  • Morning Journal for 8 or 16 minutes.
  • Plan 3 Most Important Tasks (MIT) for the day and then identify the ONE thing.
  • Shower.
  • Prayer & Meditation for 20 minutes.
  • Breakfast (usually smoothie or 2 hard boiled eggs).
  • Listening to podcasts along the way.
  • Start the day.

That’s my morning routine. I think, everyone should have a routine to get into the groove of starting a brand new day. And, I would like to know what’s yours?
